Last fall when the boys got their own ATVs the hubs and I agreed that they will always have to do two (maybe three) warm up laps. They are 8 and 6 so half the time they remember all of the rules and think they’re invincible. Then the other half they seemed to forget everything we’ve taught them.
Warm up laps force them to slow down and get familiarized with the ATV to make sure they remember where everything is and how it works. It also gives them the chance to pay attention to their surroundings on the trails, around the barns, and in the yard. It forces them to pay attention to each other as well as their littlest brother who likes to drive his electric motorcycle on the same paths they take.
This tip is nothing grand but something that I think all new riders (especially younger ones) should do until they are very comfortable with whatever they are riding and the area they are riding in.
